I had never heard of the New Atheists until my recent plunge back into the world of religion (more about that later). My conversation with an American Methodist pastor led me to Richard Dawkins’ website where I stared open-mouthed at the atheist ribbons. Since when did atheism become an organisation in itself? Since when did atheists need a symbol? I have a lot of time for Richard Dawkins and even more for Christopher Hitchens, but somehow something has gone wrong. In the initial stages after the Haiti earthquake I came across a secular donation page endorsed by Dawkins and Hitchens among others. At first I genuinely believed it was a spoof. Who cares if the charity is religious or not, and who really believes that only the religious donate to charity?
I do not believe in New Atheists. An atheist is an atheist, a person who does not believe in a god or gods.
